Veterans Day Ceremony and Dedication of new Lake Cherokee Veterans Memorial

A Veterans Day Ceremony and Flag Raising Ceremony will be held on Veterans Day at the site for Memorial. The ceremony agenda:

  • Presentation of colors by Scout Troop 201

  • Invocation by Rev. Mike Maxwell (Pastor of Church at Lake Cherokee and Lake Cherokee resident)

  • Welcome by Bart Owens (President, Lake Cherokee Community Foundation)

  • Short remarks

    • Kevin Jones (Manager of Cherokee Water Company)

    • Gary Mapes, (President of Cherokee Water Company Board of Directors)

    • Thomas White (Designer of the Lake Cherokee Veterans Memorial and US Marine Corps Veteran)

    • John Morgan (US Army Veteran, Founding member of the Friends of Lake Cherokee Veterans Memorial, and founder/keeper of the northside Lake Cherokee Veterans Trail)

  • Lowering of old American flag and raising of new American flag by Troop 201

  • History of the American flag and reading of “I am the Flag” by Miguel Fabbiani

  • Pledge of Allegiance by Barrett Newsom,

  • National Anthem sung by Dee Kennel

  • Closing remarks

Directions to the site of the Veterans Memorial:  From Longview, drive south on 322, pass the East Texas Regional Airport.  Take first left onto County Rd 2011 and drive until it ends.  Take left at the “T” onto County Rd 1716.  Take a quick first left onto County Rd 2125A.  Take a left onto County Rd. 2125.  Follow it until it ends at an entrance to Lake Cherokee.  Take a left onto Cherokee Trail.  Follow Cherokee Trail around, staying to the right, until it turns into Persimmon Point and dead ends into a parking area and the Fuel Station. 

This event has unlimited standing room, but limited seating
